Citizenship through Naturalization

Naturalization is the final step in many immigration journeys. We prepare eligible permanent residents to apply for U.S. citizenship with confidence.

Overview

Becoming a United States citizen

Naturalization is the process by which a lawful permanent resident becomes a U.S. citizen. Most applicants qualify after five years as a permanent resident — or three years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen — provided they meet residence, physical-presence, and good-moral-character requirements.

The process includes filing Form N-400, a biometrics appointment, an interview, and English and civics tests, followed by the Oath of Allegiance. We help applicants prepare for each step and address any issues in their history before they apply.

General eligibility requirements

  • Residence 5 years as a permanent resident (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
  • Physical presence sufficient time physically present in the United States.
  • Good moral character typically during the statutory period before filing.
  • English & civics ability to read, write, and speak basic English and pass the civics test.
A criminal record or long absences from the U.S. can affect eligibility. We review your history carefully before filing, so problems are addressed — not discovered at the interview.
